Platte County labor and delivery nurse Megan Mendoza describes why access to healthcare is critical for new Wyoming moms, and how Medicaid can help.

Mendoza was on Medicaid after the birth of her first child, and the support it provided helped her get through school and launch her professional career.

Now, she sees how important it is for new moms to have insurance for a full year after giving birth, particularly considering the mental health challenges women can face from postpartum depression.

Currently, Wyoming Medicaid only covers new moms for two months after they give birth. However, a bill currently before the Wyoming Legislature could change that.

“House Bill 4 – Medicaid twelve month postpartum coverage” would extend this period to 12 months, ensuring new moms who lack insurance have access to the care they need to ensure that they—and, in turn, their babies—remain healthy.

Learn more about why this postpartum extension bill matters in the fight for Medicaid expansion.
