TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR LOCAL LEGISLATORS
IMPORTANT:
- You’ll write your message in the text box on Step 2, where it says “Personalize your message.”
- Your message will be delivered individually to both your local state representative and state senator.
- Don’t click the “Send message” button until you write your message.
- REMEMBER TO DELETE THE TEXT THAT SAYS “[DELETE THIS TEXT AND INSERT YOUR MESSAGE HERE]”
YOUR MESSAGE SHOULD HAVE THREE SHORT PARTS:
1. Say who you are.
Make sure to tell them you’re a voter in their district. Maybe thank them for their work (even if you tend to disagree with them)
My name is ____. I live in _____ and I’m a voter in your district. Thank you for your service in the Wyoming Legislature.
2. Say what you want.
I’m writing today to ask you to support Medicaid expansion in the upcoming 2022 session to ensure all Wyoming residents have medical freedom.
3. Say why you want it.
[This is where you can add a sentence or two about how no one has medical freedom if they don’t have access to basic healthcare]
PRO TIPS
Keep it brief: Lawmakers get tons of emails. If you write them a novel, they’re not going to read it.
Change the message subject: This will let them know your email is not spam.
TALKING POINTS
A personal, values-based message is best. Maybe mention a few of these things:
- Lawmakers spoke at length during the recent special session on vaccine mandates about “medical freedom” and how all Wyoming residents have the right to their own healthcare decisions. But 25,000 of our Wyoming neighbors have no medical freedom because they not have access to basic healthcare.
- Expanding Medicaid would offer coverage to these 25,000 people, ensuring that they have the ability to go to the doctor and make healthcare decisions for themselves as they see fit.
- Some people who lack health insurance are forced to go to the hospital because of a serious injury or illness, even if they cannot afford to pay. These folks are often plunged into tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, making it less likely they’ll ever be able to afford health insurance and attain medical freedom.
- People who suffer from serious physical or mental illness and who cannot afford to seek treatment are not free.
